The Weed-Lover's Guide to Sonoma Valley

Wine grapes aren’t the only crop worth traveling to Sonoma for. Yes, the region is renowned for its meandering vineyards, charming towns, and farm-to-table fare. It’s also a fabulous destination for cannabis lovers, boasting everything from lush farms to immersive tasting experiences.

This fall, consider taking a trip to Sonoma Valley and enjoying the other bountiful crop of the region. Read on for our guide to the best weed-friendly things to do in Sonoma and other activities you won’t want to miss.

What is Croptober?

Croptober is the nickname for the cannabis harvest season. It’s when outdoor growers cut down mature plants to trim, dry, and cure the buds. The harvest typically begins in late September and runs through October, though some Northern California growers continue into November.

In Sonoma, fall marks peak harvest season across the region, making it an especially fun time to get an up-close look at the farms and growers behind your favorite plant.

Where to Stay

So, you’re headed to Sonoma for a cannabis-friendly vacay. The first important decision to make is where to stay while you’re there.

Before you book, keep in mind that a weed-friendly destination doesn’t necessarily mean a weed-friendly hotel. Many hotels in the area have smoke-free policies, so check the property’s rules before you light up. You can look for accommodations that specifically allow cannabis use in designated outdoor spaces or offer cannabis-friendly amenities, like CBD spa treatments, cannabis-focused events, or products available on-property.

While there are lots of wonderful places to stay in the area, we’ve rounded up a few weed-friendly spots to help you narrow down your selection. (Not staying at a smoke-friendly spot? Packing along a few of your favorite edibles—like those from Lost Farm—can help you partake respectfully.)

Mine and Farm - The Inn at Guerneville

Nestled among the redwood trees along the Russian River is Mine and Farm, a quaint and charming, cannabis-friendly inn. The owners grow cannabis for personal use on-site and are even known to share homegrown pre-rolls with their 21+ guests around the evening fire.

They also host wellness events like canna-massages, garden tours, and private infused dining, as well as complimentary cannabis experiences. Mine and Farm was even named one of the “World’s Greatest Places” in 2024 by TIME Magazine!

Farmhouse Inn

If your ideal weed-friendly getaway involves leaning into a little luxury, consider checking into Farmhouse Inn. Located in Forestville, this wellness retreat and boutique hotel is perfect for those looking to be pampered.

Situated between vineyards, redwood groves, and the California coast, Farmhouse Inn boasts a spa menu with CBD-infused treatments and massages. It’s a decadent way to dip a toe into Sonoma wellness culture without leaving the comfort of your hotel.

AutoCamp Sonoma

Want to get close to nature without getting too close? You can enjoy Sonoma in all of its outdoor splendor at AutoCamp Sonoma without truly “roughing it.” Stay in a luxury tent, a cabin, or even one of the property’s iconic Airstreams for more of a glamping vibe. Hello, rustic chic!

Partake at Your Weed-Friendly Stay

California allows cannabis use on private property if the property owner permits it. So, if you booked one of the weed-friendly stays mentioned here, check with your host or hotel to see where you’re allowed to partake.

Some properties may have designated outdoor areas or other specific spaces where cannabis use is allowed. Just because your hotel is cannabis-friendly doesn’t mean you can spark up anywhere, so always ask beforehand.

Better yet? Pack some Lost Farm gummies to enjoy back at your accommodations.

What to See & Do

Now that you’ve decided where to stay, it’s time to plan your itinerary of must-see spots.

Wander Amongst the Redwoods

Grab a latte and head to the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Preserve, where you can weave through a forest of ancient giants, some more than 1,000 years old. The park has several self-guided trails to choose from, including leisurely options for those looking for more of a stroll than a hike.

And while you can enjoy the redwoods after you’ve partaken, leave the lighter at home. Smoking and vaping are prohibited in California state parks.

Explore the Local Towns

Based on where you’re staying, pick one of the local towns to peruse. From Healdsburg to Sebastopol, get ready to overload yourself with charm. Spend a few hours popping into boutiques, galleries, coffee shops, and whatever else you fancy. No rigid itinerary required.

Do a Wine Tour

For those who choose to drink, no trip to Sonoma is complete without experiencing its famous wine country. Book a tasting, tour a vineyard, or simply settle in with a nice glass of Pinot and enjoy the view. Ahhhh.

Just be mindful of mixing cannabis and alcohol. Using the two together can increase impairment, so consider enjoying them at separate points in your trip. And whichever you choose, plan to take a rideshare or leave the driving to someone sober.

Take a Farm Tour

So, you’ve toured a winery or brewery (or two) and are ready to move on to something a little more…green. If you’ve never taken a weed farm tour, Sonoma Cannabis Wine Tours offers private tours of working farms, giving you the chance to meet local growers and learn how cannabis goes from plant to final product.

And if you’re searching for Napa cannabis experiences, consider expanding your trip into neighboring Napa Valley. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to explore California’s cannabis culture while still getting the full wine country experience.

Choose a guided private tour or self-drive option, depending on your vibe. If you’re visiting during Croptober, you’ll get to experience the region during its biggest harvest season of the year.

Explore the Russian River

In the summer months, the Russian River is warm enough to swim in. As the autumn cools down the valley, trade your swimsuit for a kayak or canoe and take in the scenery from the water.

Be sure to save any partaking for dry land. Cannabis can affect your coordination and reaction time, so it’s best to stay sober while you’re out on the water.

Pack a Picnic

The ultimate munchies may very well be a picnic, complete with charcuterie, fresh bread, fruit, and local cheeses. Okay, perhaps it’s a bit elevated. You're in Sonoma; what did you expect?

Pop by a local market, stock your basket, and find a scenic place to spread out your blanket. Just save the partaking for a private or licensed space where cannabis consumption is explicitly permitted.

Book a Spa Treatment

After all that exploring, give yourself permission to relax. Book a massage, facial, or mineral soak and spend an afternoon going full vacation mode. To keep things on-theme, look for a CBD-infused treatment, like the options offered at Farmhouse Inn.

Have a Great Dinner

Sonoma’s rep for farm-to-table cuisine is well-earned, which means there's no shortage of delicious places to end your day. If seafood is calling your name, head toward the coast for fresh fish or oysters in Bodega Bay.

Book a Cannabis Experience

Look for private cannabis experiences where consumption is explicitly allowed.

Depending on what’s available during your visit, that could mean an infused dinner, guided weed tasting, or another 21+ event. As mentioned, always be sure to double-check the rules before booking, since not every cannabis tour or farm allows guests to consume on site.

Where to Shop and Partake in Sonoma County

You’ve toured the farms, explored the redwoods, and enjoyed some local goodies. Now comes the important question: Where can you actually stock up?

Sonoma County is home to a variety of cannabis dispensaries where adults 21+ can browse everything from locally grown flower to edibles. Here are a few spots to consider checking out.

Visit a Consumption Lounge

It’s like a bar, but you swap the cocktails for cannabis. The Lounge at Mercy Wellness in Cotati offers adults 21+ a place to legally enjoy cannabis on-site.

You can pick up your products of choice at the dispensary, then settle into the lounge to enjoy them. The space allows for smoking, vaping, and edibles and offers table service, along with cannabis-infused refreshments.

Opting for an edible? Be sure to brush up on edible dosing and onset before you partake.

Shop at Solful in Sebastopol

For a dispensary experience that celebrates Sonoma’s agricultural roots, check out Solful in Sebastopol. The dispensary specializes in sun-grown cannabis with a focus on small farms and sustainably cultivated products.

You can browse through a selection of edibles (including your faves from Kiva brands like Camino, Lost Farm, Petra, Terra, and Kiva Chocolate), flower, pre-rolls, and more, or chat with the staff to find something that suits your vibe.

Explore Perfect Union in Napa

If your wine country getaway takes you to neighboring Napa, consider stopping by Perfect Union. This dispensary offers a range of cannabis products, like flower, pre-rolls, vapes, and edibles (they also stock Camino, Lost Farm, and Terra). It’s another option for stocking up before you head back to your stay.

Plan Your Croptober Getaway

Sonoma may be synonymous with wine country, but there’s more growing there than just grapes. Croptober is the perfect excuse to experience a different side of the region and learn a little more about the people, places, and plants behind California cannabis.

However you choose to spend your getaway, be sure to partake responsibly, stay curious, and enjoy the harvest.  We absolutely love Northern California — including Sonoma and Napa Valley — so much so that we created an incredible Lost Farm collaboration with Sonoma Hills Farm to bring the terroir of this incredible region to our edibles lovers. And we hope this article helps guide even more cannabis fans to this beautiful, unique area with so much to offer.
